STANLEY B. BURNS, MD, FACS
Stanley B. Burns, MD, FACS, a New York City ophthalmologist and Research Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry, New York University: Langone Medical Center, is an internationally distinguished author, curator, historian, collector, archivist and TV consultant. His collection of over one million historic photographs is recognized as the most important private comprehensive collection of early photography and was rated as “One of America’s Top 100 Collections”. The emphasis is on unique photographs not available anywhere else. In 1977, he founded The Burns Archive to share his discoveries. He has authored 46 books, over 1100 articles, curated over one hundreds of exhibitions, and consulted on dozens of documentaries and feature films. His latest publications are Stiffs, Skulls & Skeletons: Medical Photography and Symbolism and Mensur & Schmiss: German Dueling Societies. He was Medical, Historical & Technical Advisor to HBO/Cinemax’s THE KNICK and PBS’ MERCY STREET.
Elizabeth A. Burns is the Creative and Operations Director of The Burns Archive. She has co-authored various books, including Sleeping Beauty II: Grief, Bereavement & the Family, American and European Traditions, Geisha: A Photographic History, 1872-1912, the recently published Stiffs, Skulls, & Skeletons and Setting Sun: Painted Photographs of Meiji Japan, as well as designing the medical series of books. Ms. Burns has curated and organized dozens of exhibitions, including those on criminology, spirit photography, early flight, Lewis Hine and the playground, African American history, and various medical topics. She has consulted on numerous documentaries, feature films and television productions. She was the photographic archivist and research consultant to HBO-Cinemax series, THE KNICK, and associate technical advisor to PBS’s MERCY STREET.
